Partner countries developing the project “Viking” enhance cooperation

On March 27 in Batumi (Georgia) Minister of Transport and Communications, Eligijus Masiulis is meeting the ministers of transport of Georgia, Lithuania, Belarus, Ukraine and Moldova. Main topics of the meeting – development of the railway project “Viking” and promotion of transit transport flows between the regions of the Danube River and the Baltic Sea.

Ministers will discuss the opportunities of more efficient use of the railway project “Viking” connecting the Baltic Sea and the Black Sea. Also possibilities for Azerbaijan to join the project are considered.  
 
“For intensification of competitive ability of this project the countries intend to coordinate their cargo transportation tariffs. Also we will discuss opportunities for attraction of more maritime transport operators, which could carry cargo by the Baltic Sea and the Black Sea at more favourable tariffs”, says Minister Masiulis.  
 
At the meeting the ministers will consider Moldova’s proposal for stimulation of container cargo transportation via Moldova between the countries of the regions of the Danube River and the Baltic Sea. The route should go from Klaipėda Seaport via the territories of Lithuania, Belarus, Ukraine and Moldova to the Romanian Port of Konstanta. 
 
During the visit in Georgia a bilateral meeting of Lithuanian Minister of Transport and Communications, Eligijus Masiulis, and Georgian Minister of Economy and Sustainable Development, Vera Kobalia, will be held. At the meeting they will discuss the perspectives of cooperation in the field of civil aviation and opportunities for exchange of experience in the EU Twinning Programme.
