RAIN – among the best 12 projects of the European Union

RAIN2, the project of Broadband Internet development, is in the list of 12 exemplary projects of good practice, which have been included in The Guide to Broadband Investment 2011 ordered by the European Commission. All the 12 projects have been implemented in the field of broadband communication development.

RAIN – among the best 12 projects of the European Union
The Guide to Broadband Investment is the publication intended for EU member states, which are planning the implementation of broadband communication projects. The Guide to Broadband Investment analyses projects of the following countries: 3 Italian, 3 Swedish, 2 French, 1 Danish, 1 United Kingdom, 1 The Netherlands, 1 Finnish and 1 Lithuanian. The Guide to Broadband Investment deals with investment and management models, problems and obtained results.

The aim of the project implemented by Lithuania provides opportunities for citizens, state and local self-government institutions, as well as business organisations, to use broadband communication services within rural territories of the country. It gives possibilities for solution of problems related to digital division between major towns and rural territories, and acceleration of the development of information and knowledge society in Lithuania.
 
The implementation of the RAIN and RAIN2 projects will enable population and organisations to use broadband communication services on the 98% of rural territories of Lithuania.
 
The even development and distribution of advanced electronic infrastructure is a necessary prerequisite enabling population of EU member states to use information and communication technologies and resources of electronic contents. Also these factors should facilitate a successful development of business and promote competitive abilities. The European Commission notes that the development of infrastructure of broadband communication is particularly important on remote territories and regions located far from the major towns.
