Players and teams of EuroBasket 2011 invite Lithuanian citizens to drive safely

Participants of the European Basketball Championship, EuroBasket 2011, will join the campaign on road safety running under the motto “We play and drive by the rules”, which is held in Lithuania for the first time.

During the campaign all members of participating teams will sign on a special stand, thus the basketball players will become signatories of the campaign and will invite Lithuanian citizens to follow their example – to respect the rules and drive safely.
“The basketball family already lost a lot of its members on the road – famous stars as well as players whose names you may have never heard of. Their fate could have been different. Let’s contribute to make traffic safer”, with these words basketball players address the society.
The campaign builds up on the success of a similar campaign launched last year during the FIBA Basketball World Championship 2010 held in Turkey. The campaign is organized by UNECE, FIBA Europe and the International Basketball Federation (FIBA) with the support of the Lithuanian Basketball Federation (LBF), the Spanish Basketball Federation (FEB) and the Ministry of Transport and Communications of Lithuania.
“Road crashes in Lithuania claim the lives of about 300 people yearly, even more get injured. These are not accidents. These are events that can be prevented through awareness and responsible behaviour”, says Eligijus Masiulis, Minister of Transport and Communications.
Vladas Garastas, President of Lithuanian Basketball Federation, expects this educating campaign to enhance the traffic safety on Lithuanian roads due to the high authority and popularity of basketball players, particularly among the fans of younger age.
